BOSTON COLLEGE SECURITY BREACH

Last week, Boston College discovered a security breach on a computer located on campus but managed by a third-party service provider. Given this discovery, Boston College immediately took the computer offline, secured the breach and took aggressive steps to fix the problem and increase security. After a comprehensive investigation, they concluded that the computer was not targeted to access personal information but rather to allow the illegal user to launch attacks on other computers. However, given the serious nature of any computer breach, they are advising those people who may have been affected that their social security numbers were on the computer. Those who were affected received a letter in the mail with details on how to protect themselves from potential identity theft.
