Unique Issues Facing LGBTQ Clients in Elder Law

p.m. – The film, Gen Silent, **directed by Stu Maddux (2011), will be viewed. The film shows how LGBT people who fought the earliest battles for equality now face so much fear about discrimination, or worse, in health care and long-term care settings that they hide their past lives, are afraid to ask for help, and die earlier.

**Please note: the film Gen Silent, is licensed to AARP. Under its licensing agreement, in order for AARP to allow us to view the film, there must be a minimum audience of 40 people registered with AARP to view the film. AARP is requiring everyone attending the program to register to view the film at the following link: https://aarp.cvent.com/GENSilentUCONN.  IT IS CRITICAL THAT EVERYONE REGISTER TO VIEW THE FILM

The program will address:

  • Issues LGBTQ individuals face as they age;
  • Estate planning issues and document drafting for LGBTQ clients;
  • Discrimination that occurs in health care settings and the struggles that LGBTQ individuals face in obtaining access to safe, quality health care;
  • How professional care management services can be used to recommend/manage the best options for care services for LGBTQ elderly; and
  • How to provide advocacy and support (legal and non-legal) when discrimination or harassment are present.
