House Majority Leader
State Representative, 1st General Assembly District

Matt Ritter is the House Majority Leader and a four-term state representative serving the 1st Assembly District of Hartford. He was elected to the Connecticut General Assembly in 2010 and became House Majority Leader in January 2017.

Rep. Ritter earned an undergraduate degree in government from Colby College and his JD from UConn School of Law. He is a partner at Shipman & Goodwin LLP and practices in the areas of public finance, municipal law, and election law. He is a member of the CBA and served as YLS municipal law committee co-chair in 2009-2010 as well as the section’s legislative liaison in 2008-2009.

Rep. Ritter is on the board of directors of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Hartford and is a corporator of Saint Francis Hospital and Hartford Hospital. Prior to his appointment as House Majority Leader, he served as co-chair of the Public Health Committee. Before his election to the General Assembly, Rep. Ritter served on the Hartford City Council for three years and was chair of the Legislative Affairs and Planning & Economic Development Committees. He has received numerous awards from social service nonprofit organizations for his work in healthcare, including the Governmental Leadership Award from HARC in 2016 and the Connecticut Community Providers Association “Community Champion” Award in 2015.
