CBA Disaster Insurance hotline Protocol Chart-

About the Initiative

Tropical Storm Irene and the Halloween snowstorm in 2012 caused great harm to our state and our neighbors. In response, the Connecticut Bar Association and its Insurance Law Section have developed a program to allow us as lawyers to assist the public in a time of need via a free publichotline, which will provide storm victims with pro bono insurance advice.

This is an invitation to you to join us in this effort. The program has been developed cooperatively with representatives of FEMA, the Connecticut Insurance Department, and the Connecticut Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection. Via a toll-free numberand email address, members of the bar will provide pro bono legal assistance to individuals and businesses in need of insurance advice. The initial call or contact will go to CBA staff in New Britain, who will fill out an intake form. They will then forward the intake form to the next lawyer on the list of participating volunteers. The name of the caller’s insurance company will be flagged in order to avoid conflicts. The CBA is acquiring an insurance rider to cover volunteers.

We ask that you be prepared to provide a half-hour consultation on a pro bono basis. If the matter needs continuing assistance thereafter, you can either retain the matter on a pro bono basis, refer it to the lawyer referral service of the appropriate county bar association (all of which have been advised of the program) or we will attempt to place it, pro bono, with other CBA lawyers.
