Program Description

Karen Gano and Danielle Ferrucci will provide an overview to the application of the doctrine of cy pres to charitable trusts in Connecticut. They will address jurisdictional issues as to the application of cy pres and summarize the impact of the passage of the Connecticut Uniform Trust Code on the doctrine.

Speaker Bios

Karen Gano is an Assistant Attorney General in the Special Litigation Unit of the Connecticut Attorney General’s Office. She handles charities and land conservation matters for the Attorney General. Before coming to the Attorney General’s Office, AAG Gano worked in the nonprofit sector, then with the Connecticut law firm Carmody and Torrance LLP, in the Trusts and Estates Division and representing nonprofits. Gano is immediate past president of the National Association of State Charities Officials (NASCO) and was founding president of the Multistate Registration and Filing Project, Inc., a multistate corporation that is developing a multistate, unified electronic charities registration platform. She serves on the Executive Committee for the Estates and Probate Section of the Connecticut Bar Association and is a representative to the Connecticut Probate Rules Committee. Gano is a graduate of Smith College and University of Connecticut School of Law.

Danielle Ferrucci practices in the areas of estate planning, estate settlement and trust administration. She assists individual clients with the full range of planning techniques for tax-effective intergenerational and charitable transfers. As part of her practice, Danielle prepares estate tax returns, fiduciary income tax returns and probate documents, and represents estates before the IRS and DRS on audit. In addition, Danielle actively administers trusts and advises trustees. She also represents clients, including individual and institutional fiduciaries in contested matters in Connecticut's probate courts. Prior to joining the firm, Danielle served as a law clerk to Connecticut Supreme Court Justices Joette Katz and Richard Palmer.
