Sara Bronin

Sara Bronin will receive the Citizen of the Law Award at the CBA’s annual awards celebration, Celebrate with the Stars, on Wednesday, April 20. She is an attorney, architect, policymaker, and professor at Cornell University. Both within and outside of her professional career she advocates for the reform of discriminatory land use and zoning laws.

In 2020, Professor Bronin founded DesegregateCT, a pro-homes grassroots coalition made up of 70 nonprofit organizations and thousand of individuals that advocates for more equitable, affordable, and environmentally sustainable land use policies in Connecticut. The organization focuses on expanding diversity and supply in the housing stock of the state as well as enacting reforms to end the segregation caused by current land use and local planning and zoning laws.

Professor Bronin also serves as an advisor of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, an advisor of the Sustainable Development Code, and a board member of the Latinos in Heritage Conservation. In June of 2021, President Biden nominated her to the position of chairman of the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation (ACHP).

The Citizen of the Law Award is presented to a judge, attorney, or paralegal who has made a significant contribution to a charitable or public service cause that does not involve professional legal skills, but provides inspiration and contributes to the needy, the good of society, the environment, or our way of life. These activities have been undertaken on a non-professional, charitable basis with little or no personal economic reward, and some personal sacrifice.
