Rosendo Garza, Jr. is one of four attorneys who will receive The Honorable Anthony V. DeMayo Pro Bono Award at the CBA’s annual awards celebration, Celebrate with the Stars, on Wednesday, May 3.
Attorney Garza is a senior associate at Day Pitney LLP. He handles energy matters, including regulatory, compliance, and transactional matters. He represents clients in proceedings before the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, the Department of Energy, and federal courts and regularly provides counsel on the design and operation of the region’s wholesale electric markets. In addition to being a lawyer, Attorney Garza holds the rank of lieutenant colonel in the United States Marine Corps Reserve and has served three tours of duty in Iraq and one in Afghanistan as an infantry officer.
Attorney Garza is passionate about pro bono work. While earning his JD from UConn School of Law, he received hands-on training through the university’s Asylum & Human Rights Clinic and represented a transgender woman in obtaining asylum. As a way to continue working with military service members, he has represented military veterans in landlord-tenant disputes and helped clients with discharge upgrades. He has also successfully represented an incarcerated client in an appeal before the Second Circuit, where he argued on behalf of the client’s constitutional right to be free from cruel and unusual punishment. In this case, the appellate court reversed the district court’s grant of summary judgment. He also represented a young Ecuadorian mother, helping her regain custody of her son under the Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction. He is currently helping an Afghan refugee seeking asylum.
The Honorable Anthony V. DeMayo Pro Bono Award recognizes CBA members who demonstrated dedication to the provision of legal services without expectation of payment to those in need. He is one of four attorneys receiving the award this year.
