During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Connecticut Bar Association (CBA) is now offering non-members the opportunity to conduct online legal research for free. Interested attorneys and legal professionals will be granted a one-month trial membership to access Casemaker, an extensive and advanced legal research taxonomy and search engine online software. To take advantage of this offer, available during the duration of the pandemic, non-members should visit ctbar.org/casemakertrial.
“The Connecticut Bar Association is dedicated to ensuring access to justice during this pandemic,” said CBA President and co-chair of the 2020 COVID-19 Pandemic Task Force Technology Subcommittee Ndidi N. Moses. “To provide all those in the legal community with access to online legal research during this time, we hope this resource assists the community with ensuring legal issues are addressed.”
Casemaker is used by more than 400,000 attorneys nationwide to conduct over six million searches per year. In Connecticut, Casemaker is available exclusively through CBA membership and saves members thousands over other legal research providers. Last year, CBA members conducted more than 275,000 unique Casemaker searches.
The CBA’s 2020 COVID-19 Pandemic Task Force Technology Subcommittee developed this trial membership to give legal profession access to online legal research while the law libraries are closed and a way to save money during this time of uncertainty. The Technology Subcommittee is one of the task force’s eight subcommittees and is charged with addressing the technical issues that arise from working remotely, such as holding hearings and depositions from a distance.
In March 2020, at the onset of the pandemic, the CBA established the task force to respond to the growing legal issues and needs in Connecticut arising from the COVID-19 pandemic. The task force includes lawyers, judges, and professionals statewide who are working collaboratively and swiftly to ensure issues and concerns raised by the legal community and the public are met.
