Elections require a massive team of dedicated people, especially with the implementation of early voting, to ensure our citizens are able to exercise their right to vote. The Secretary’s Legal Assistance Project, formed by The Connecticut Bar Association and the Secretary of the State, trains volunteer attorneys to assist the Secretary of the State and respond to problems during Early Voting and on Election Day.

The role of the volunteer attorney is to serve as a neutral, nonpartisan source of information. Since this program began, volunteer attorneys have made a critical difference in being able to sort out the facts of a situation, report back to the Secretary’s office, and then communicate directives.

With an on-call role, typically there is no need to take the day off from work. The Secretary of the State's office will contact volunteer attorneys by phone as needed to respond to problems in their area. If the issue requires an in-person response, a volunteer in that area may be asked to travel to a voting location until the issue is resolved.

With the in-person role, volunteers will be assigned to a voting location and will contact our office with questions and concerns as needed.

For both roles, volunteers choose the days and times they are available and participate in a virtual training. The virtual training will take place the week of October 13th on Zoom; more details to come.

If you are actively involved in a political campaign, or if you or a family member are a candidate whose name appears on the ballot, you are prohibited from participating in the program for the duration of that campaign.
