FROM THE BRANCH
Effective Monday, March 7, the Judicial Branch has suspended the requirement of wearing a mask when entering a Judicial Branch facility. If COVID-19 activity increases in the state, mask use by individuals may again be required. Also effective March 7, the Judicial Branch requests but is not requiring jurors and prospective jurors to wear a mask while in the jury assembly room or the jury deliberation room. Mask wearing is an effective prevention strategy against the spread of COVID-19 and other respiratory diseases. As such, the Judicial Branch supports an individual’s decision to wear a mask and to socially distance when indoors, if possible.
SPECIAL ELECTION
On Tuesday, March 1, areas of Windsor and Hartford held a special election for the 5th House District left vacated by Brandon McGee (D). Maryam Khan (D) of Windsor won the election, becoming the first Muslim elected to the Connecticut House of Representatives. Sen. Saud Anwar had previously been elected in the Senate. This should be the last of the special elections during this legislative session.
Rep. Cathy Abercrombie (D-83, Meriden, Berlin) and Rep. Brian Smith (D-48, Colchester) both announced that they will not be running in the November House elections.
CAPITOL REOPENING TO THE PUBLIC
Although the Legislative Office Building (LOB) and the State Capitol have been opened to the first floor, Wednesday offered the first opportunity for the public to rise to the second floor in the Capitol on Wednesday. The legislature was in session to approve the renominations of some judges along with executive nominations. The third floor was still closed to all except the Senate and its staff.
