CONNECTICUT BAR ASSOCIATION COMMITTEE ON
LEGAL ASSISTANTS -- JUNE 1997
Connecticut attorneys agree that legal assistants
play an increasingly important role in the delivery of legal services. In 1992,
the Connecticut Department of Labor projected a growth of 34.2% in the paralegal
field by the year 2000. To aid CBA members in locating qualified candidates for
paralegal openings, the Committee on Legal Assistants provides this list of job
banks maintained by degree programs and paralegal associations in Connecticut.
The paralegal job banks listed here are free to employers. They are utilized by
both entry level and experienced paralegals. The types of degrees granted are
listed in parenthesis. The Committee on Legal Assistants is supplying this
resource to CBA members to assist when hiring needs arise.
AMERICAN BAR ASSOCIATION
APPROVAL
The American Bar Association approves legal
assistant programs which meet the educational standards established by its
Approval Commission. ABA-approved programs require a minimum of 60 credits of
education, either as a prerequisite to or as part of the paralegal education
program. Additional criteria on library facilities, faculty, student services,
and advisory committees must also be met. A minimum of 18 credits of legal
specialty courses is required. ABA approval is a voluntary process. Of the
estimated 650 paralegal education programs in existence today, the ABA has
approved more than 200. This list of job banks indicates which degree programs
have obtained American Bar Association approval.
AMERICAN ASSOCIATION FOR PARALEGAL
EDUCATION
Membership in the American Association for
Paralegal Education (AAfPE) requires that an institution's program of study be
ABA-approved or in substantial compliance with ABA guidelines. This national
organization of paralegal educators promotes high standards for paralegal
education through discussion, conferences, publications, Task Forces and
cooperation with other national, regional and local organizations. This resource
indicates which degree programs are among the 244 institutional members of
AAfPE.
