Adult Civic Education: Your Government and You
Be informed and know your rights. The Connecticut Bar Association's (CBA) adult civic education initiative offers free civic education classes to the public. Providing civic education to students in middle and high school has already been a vital piece of the CBA's mission for more than thirty years. Under the leadership of CBA Past President Norman K. Janes, the adult civic education program gives lawyers an opportunity to share their expertise in civic issues with adults.

Volunteer attorneys serve as facilitators and presenters for these civic education classes, which range from one one-hour class to four two-hour classes. Lesson plans and training are provided by the CBA. Real-life scenarios engage participants and help teach them how our government affects their daily lives. Topics for discussion include eminent domain, government wiretapping, the death penalty, and the right-to-die debate.

Bill of Rights in Action
This program helps participants understand how the U.S. Constitution affects their lives. Volunteer attorneys spark lively discussions on selected amendments, and situations focus specifically on legal protections afforded under the Bill of Rights. Choose one topic for a two-hour class or choose all four and create a four week series.

The choice of topics are:
-First Amendment- Freedom of Religion
-First Amendment- Free Speech v. Private Property
-Fourth Amendment- Search and Seizure
-Eighth Amendment- Protection from Unfair Punishments
