Website Accessibility: Preventing Potential ADA Lawsuits CLE (EYL181023)

Tuesday, October 23, 2018

5:30 PM to 8:00 PM (Eastern Daylight Time)

The Graduate Club

155 Elm St, New Haven, Connecticut, United States

Presented by the Young Lawyers Section

About the Program

Web accessibility provides equal access and equal opportunity to people with diverse abilities. The Americans with Disabilities Act applies to websites as well as physical facilities. There has been a dramatic increase in lawsuits related to web accessibility. The industries primarily targeted in lawsuits include universities, retail businesses, financial institutions, medical facilities, gyms, and more. Unfortunately, there is no definitive standard for accessibility, but the World Wide Web Consortium's Web Content Accessibility Guidelines Version 2.0 with AA success criteria has become the presumptive standard. The program will include an overview of website accessibility, legal issues that can arise from an inaccessible website, and how to comply with guidelines to prevent future lawsuits under the Americans with Disabilities Act.

You Will Learn

  • About website accessibility and disability laws, including the Americans with Disabilities Act, Section 508 and state statutes
  • Actions universities and businesses can take to prevent a potential ADA lawsuit based on website inaccessibility
