Ethics and Intellectual Property: Traps, Pitfalls, and Adventures in IP Lawyering CLE (EIP181205)

Wednesday, December 5, 2018

5:30 PM to 8:00 PM (Eastern Standard Time)

Cantor Colburn LLP

20 Church St, Hartford, Connecticut, United States

Presented by the Intellectual Property Section

About the Program

This program will discuss legal ethics (i.e. Connecticut Rules of Professional Conduct/Model Rules of Professional Responsibility) from the perspective of the intellectual property attorney. The format will be interactive. Ethical scenarios and dilemmas will be provided for each area of intellectual property law (patent, trademark, copyright, trade secret, etc.) over the course of representation and a speaker will present the ethical issue, review the relevant provisions of the Rules of Professional Conduct and then facilitate a discussion with attendees on what is the best way to handle such an ethical issue. Ethical scenarios will be driven from real-world events and cases. Possible topics to be covered include: what happens if you miss a patent filing deadline, either in the US or in another country?; Conducting ethical and admissible intellectual property infringement and counterfeiting investigations; How to draft an ethical and enforceable cease and desist letter; How to know whom one’s client is in the case of joint inventorship or authorship; the duty of candor to administrative agencies, etc.
