About the Program

People turn to a lawyer they know, like, and trust – regardless of his or her practice area – when they have a legal question. The COVID-19 public health emergency has resulted in an uptick in the number of Connecticut residents experiencing an urgent family law issue. Concurrently, the Judicial Branch is adapting and is frequently rolling out updated procedures designed to assist with family law matters while prioritizing the safety of the public, the bar, and the bench.

Corporate lawyers, trusts and estates lawyers, government lawyers, civil litigators, real estate attorneys, criminal lawyers, and appellate counsel are all finding themselves fielding more questions on family law matters from their clients and neighbors at a time where they have less clarity about the status of the Family Courts and how Family Law practitioners are able to assist clients during COVID-19.

Join a panel of family law attorneys as they share the basics of the “new normal,” including how non-family law practitioners can help clients navigate the uptick in urgent family law matters.

You Will Learn

  • What family law attorneys can, and can’t, get done for their clients through the courts (Hint: Much more can be done than you might expect)
  • The panel’s experience with updated procedures that the Judicial Branch has debuted in the Family Courts, including telephonic pretrials and status conferences, and allowing for the approval of final agreements without a court hearing
  • Available practical alternatives to court that have proven successful during Coronavirus self-quarantine
  • The reasons moving forward now is better than “holding off” on beginning the divorce process
  • How to address the private communication issues that family law clients are experiencing while quarantining at home with their partner, spouse, and children
