About the Program
In reaction to school shootings and perceived need for school safety, School Resource Officers (SROs) have been employed in many schools throughout Connecticut. Their use in the public schools has come under increasing scrutiny in light of national and local events concerning police brutality and calls to defund police. This panel will discuss the research about the safety, climate, and discipline outcomes of using SROs in schools, Connecticut’s use of SROs, and explore possible alternatives to SROs in schools.
You Will Learn
- What does the national literature say about the prevalence of SROs in schools? What is their impact, nationally, on school safety? On student outcomes?
- In Connecticut, what is prevalence of SROs? Impact on school safety? On student outcomes? On school discipline of students of colors or students with disabilities?
- What is the generally defined role or duties of an SRO? What training is required for SROs in CT?
- Is the role of SRO needed in our public schools? Might other professionals better serve our students? How so?
