Waves of Change:  Supported Decision-Making and Psychiatric Advance Directives

Speakers

Kathleen D. Hayes
Elizabeth J. Hartery

Program Description

Attorney Hayes will provide an overview of Supported Decision-Making as an emerging alternative to guardianship and conservatorship. She will discuss national trends and the work of the Supported Decision-Making Coalition of Connecticut, including prospective legislative changes.

Attorney Hartery will speak on the topic of Psychiatric Advance Directives in a presentation based on her article published in the fall 2021 issue of the NAELA Journal.  In the article, Attorney Hartery explains the appropriate use of a psychiatric advance directive, discusses existing state statutes, and compares traditional health care advance directives with psychiatric advance directives.
