Presented by the Animal Law Section
About the Program
According to the US Justice Department, "wildlife trafficking threatens security, hinders economic development, and undermines the rule of law. The illicit trade in wildlife is decimating many species worldwide and threatens iconic species...with extinction." This program will be an introduction to anti-wildlife trafficking laws in the United States. The program will discuss how national security entities and law enforcement work together to interdict and punish illicit wildlife trade and will also discuss how anti-wildlife trafficking laws can be improved and better enforced on the state, local and national level.
You Will Learn
• About state and federal laws aimed at preventing and punishing illicit trade in wildlife, particularly in endangered and threatened species
• How uniformed services such as the Coast Guard, and Customs and Border Protection (among others) work with law enforcement to interdict this trade
• How wildlife trafficking is punished
• What lawyers and the law can do to crack down on wildlife traffickers
