Taboos Surrounding Women’s Healthcare

About the Program
In the United States, the lives of women have been shaped by men with political power. Gender inequality touches women in so many ways that are perhaps unintended and often undiscussed. An interesting example of inequality that remains hidden because of taboo is public bathroom spaces: the laws, norms, and regulations weigh more heavily upon menstruators. In the U.S., the hygiene and cleanliness of women are subordinated by a system that requires a woman to always carry her or their own supplies or fight with a machine that is often broken or empty. Decisions made by stakeholders with economic, legal, and political power have tacit economic consequences for women, and to the extent that poverty weighs more heavily upon women, this CLE considers one piece in a broader mosaic. This presentation will unpack a number of issues related to gender-differentiated hygiene management, including period poverty, treatment of menstruators during the bar exam, and the power of informed consumerism.
