Automation Techniques, Font Formatting, Headers/Footers & Page Numbering, Advanced Paragraph Formatting & Automatic Paragraph Numbering

Presented By the CT Bar Institute

About the Program

Nearly everyone working in an office has some experience with Microsoft Word, but learning and mastering the program’s more advanced features and settings can markedly improve your productivity and greatly decrease the time it takes you to create and finalize documents.

During this four part series covering different elements of Word, Attorney Barron K. Henley will draw from his decades of experience in legal technology, sharing the vital skills needed to utilize the word processor to its fullest potential. He will teach how to optimize Word’s settings, take advantage of its keyboard shortcuts, eliminate document formatting difficulties, and more.

For each seminar, participants will also receive relevant portions of a written guide on Microsoft Word, developed by Attorney Henley’s firm. Join us for one or more of these seminars and develop the expertise of a Microsoft Word power user.

Part III: Automation Techniques, Font Formatting, Headers/Footers & Page Numbering, Advanced Paragraph Formatting & Automatic Paragraph Numbering

The first half of the seminar will teach you automation techniques you can use every day to speed up drafting. It will cover font formatting tips and ways to control headers and footers to get the formatting you want. It will address advanced page numbering techniques so that you can change the formats of the page numbering and start over at “pg. 1” anywhere in the document.

The second half of the seminar focuses on paragraph formatting and automatic paragraph numbering techniques. It will address the importance of automatic paragraph spacing; when to use tabs and indents and how to apply them; and how to avoid inappropriate/awkward page breaks by holding headings, text, and paragraphs together. It will also cover how to set up and control bullets and how to get paragraph numbering under control.

You Will Learn

• How to use AutoText, Quick Parts/Building Blocks, Macros, and Mail Merge.
• Font formatting tips for legal users – inserting symbols, assigning shortcut keys, when to use non-breaking spaces and hyphens.
• How to number all but the first page and turn page numbering on or off in the middle of a document
• To create “page x of y” formatting, where both the page number and the total number of pages automatically calculate.
• Paragraph alignment, line spacing, better page breaks, and when to use “keep with next” and “keep lines together.”
• How to set up and control bullets and single or multi-level automatic paragraph numbering schemes.
