The Art of Valuation in Estate Planning and Contested Matters (EDU230928)

Thursday, September 28, 2023

12:00 PM to 1:00 PM (Eastern Daylight Time)

Webinar - CLE Pass Eligible

Presented by the CT Bar Institute

About the Program

The valuation of a privately held business is a mixture of art and science.  In estate planning and administration, the IRS provides guidance on when an appraisal is necessary as well as what the appraisal must contain.  In a contested family or business divorce, there may be multiple angles to consider in the valuation of the business.  This seminar will share background and stories by a qualified appraiser and an estate planning lawyer on the requirements for appraisals, when discounts for lack of marketability and control are appropriate, and identifying planning strategies related to appraisals of privately held businesses.

You Will Learn

• When it is necessary to engage a qualified appraiser
• The IRS requirements for a professional valuation
• How to read/understand the appraisal report
• How a professional appraiser should be selected
• What we should tell our clients about the appraisal process and the information required to prepare the appraisal
