Cybersecurity for Lawyers

Speaker

Sherwin Yoder, Carmody Torrance Sandak & Hennessey LLP

Program Description

Cyber criminals are increasingly targeting law firms and legal professionals, disrupting case work, exposing and monetizing client data, and hijacking transactions and settlements. It takes only one compromised participant for the criminals to ruin a deal and harm clients or other participants. This interactive discussion will address the lawyer’s ethical duties to prepare for and respond to ransomware trends, business email compromises, fraudulent funds transfers, and other external and internal cyber threats affecting the profession. Attendees will:

  • Identify the relevant rules of professional responsibility
  • Learn how to spot and avoid relevant cyber threats and scams
  • Consider low-tech, practical measures for managing cybersecurity risks, such as secure file transfer and storage techniques, email best practices, and multi-factor authentication
  • Appreciate the importance of cybersecurity assessments, awareness, and training
  • Understand the value of an incident response plan, as well as cybersecurity insurance coverage
