This program will help participants to identify common estate planning issues for international clients with U.S. connections. The program will consist of two parts. The first part of the program will review the rules for (1) classifying U.S. and non-U.S. individuals for U.S. tax purposes and (2) identifying U.S. investments or activities that can create U.S. tax, reporting and probate exposure for non-U.S. individuals. The second part of the program will illustrate common tax and estate planning pitfalls and opportunities for international families within the framework of some basic case studies, including (1) international families with a family member moving to the United States temporarily (for example, as a student) or permanently (for example, marrying a US person), and (2) international families with US real estate or portfolio investments.
