Foreign Interest in Real Property Tax Act (FIRPTA) –
What Real Estate Practitioners Need to Know

Presented by Attorney David Veleber, Stewart Title Guaranty Co.

Program Description

FIRPTA is the IRS acronym for the Foreign Investment in Real Property Tax Act. FIRPTA is a federal statutory and regulatory program which was created to help make sure that foreign persons pay their taxes on the sale of US real property interests. Under FIRPTA, buyers of these properties have the responsibility of compliance.

This presentation will help provide an overview of the basics of FIRPTA such as: What is FIRPTA? What is required to comply with FIRPTA? Why do I need to worry about it? and Are there exemptions or exceptions to the withholding and filing requirements? With an understanding of FIRPTA, it will help facilitate closings involving a foreign seller and eliminate the confusion that arises when it is discovered, often last minute, that the seller is a foreign person.
