Presented by the CT Bar Institute
About the Program
Scotland, 1563: Crops failed. People starved, and the Devil’s influence was stronger than ever, at least, that’s what everyone believed. If you were a woman living in Scotland during this turbulent time, there was a very good chance that you, or someone you knew, would be tried as a witch.
In this seminar, you will hear from the hosts of the popular “Witches of Scotland” podcast, Zoe Venditozzi and Claire Mitchell, as they talk about their book
How to Kill a Witch which unravels the grim yet absurdly bureaucratic process of identifying, accusing, trying, and executing women as witches.
You Will Learn
• An overview of history of the Scottish witch trials and the international context
• The legal structure and implications of the Scottish witch trials
• Modern day witch trial situations and parallels
• About King James, Daemonology and trauma as it relates to the Scottish witch trials
• About various individual stories such as the North Berwick trials and Geillis Duncan, Lilas Adie and the work of the witch prickers
• About feminist history and modern issues
• About the dangers of bias and ignorance
• About how the period of history examined in How to Kill a Witch mirrors today’s struggles for justice and equality
