Program Description

Leading land use lawyers from each of the three southern New England states will address the cutting-edge federal and state land use law issues in the context of national developments in the law over the last year, including the decision upholding the constitutionality of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) Communities Act, the Connecticut struggle to enact affordable housing law, and the Rhode Island decision on the demolition of nonconforming structures, along with the U.S. Supreme Court’s first major NEPA ruling in two decades. The discussion includes court decisions, legislation, administrative regulations and interpretations of existing law. The state cases covered are carefully chosen to have lessons for all three southern New England states. The format is lecture, richly illustrated with photographs, maps, and plans from the in-depth research on every case. The presentation format is lively, rotating speakers to avoid any long lectures.
