Keeping AI in Its Zone: What AI Can and Can't Do with a Zoning Code

Speaker

Sara C. Bronin
Freda H. Alverson Professor of Law
George Washington University Law School

Program Description

Can AI read a zoning code? Professor Sara Bronin, founder of the National Zoning Atlas and former chair of Hartford's Planning and Zoning Commission, argues that zoning codes will keep resisting it. Drawing on her new paper, "Keeping AI in its Zone," she will explain why codes are so hard for AI to interpret, what the Atlas's work has shown, and which uses of AI in land use hold up. A moderated discussion of Connecticut practice questions will follow: AI in the hearing room, at the permit counter, in the record on appeal, and at the lawyer's desk.
