About Our Task Force

Civility in the legal profession has routinely been a topic of studies and conversations among bar associations across the country for a number of years. Sometimes in our adversary system, tempers flare, composure is lost and respect and civility towards colleagues, judges, and staff goes out the window. What other profession is based on one side deliberately trying to prevent you from succeeding at your job? A most difficult job indeed made harder by treating each other disrespectfully. The pandemic has made being civil more challenging as we adjust to the remote age of lawyering with less in person communication, leading to reduced opportunities to know one another on a personal basis.

We have had to adjust to many changes and overcome professional and personal obstacles caused by the COVID-19 pandemic the last few years. Many lawyers have decided to retire or severely reduce their caseloads providing opportunities for younger and less experienced lawyers. The goal of this Task Force is to reinforce how civility is a critical component of a lawyer’s reputation and a consistent building block for a successful career by making recommendations that help members of the Connecticut Bar place a high priority on treating everyone with respect and dignity. Together we can increase awareness and improve civility in our noble profession.
