Meriden, Conn. — West Hartford residents now have a new resource for getting answers to legal questions, as the Connecticut Bar Association (CBA) expands its Lawyers in Libraries program to Faxon Library beginning Wednesday, September 16.
The program will offer members of the public an opportunity to meet one-on-one with a volunteer attorney for free, brief legal advice in a convenient community setting. Twenty-minute appointments will be available on the third Wednesday of each month from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and must be made in advance through the library by calling (860) 561-8202.
The CBA established Lawyers in Libraries to provide free volunteer legal services in a community setting, connecting people with attorneys at local public libraries—trusted resources that are accessible and familiar to residents. The program currently offers assistance in areas including landlord/tenant issues, immigration, family, employment, consumer rights, and personal injury matters.
“Lawyers in Libraries is an important program that meets people where they are. By partnering with local libraries, some of the most trusted resources in our communities, we reach people facing legal issues that threaten their basic needs, often with no other place to turn. By providing opportunities for individuals to meet with our volunteer attorneys, the program gives them the chance to be heard, and the confidence to know what step to take next,” stated CBA Director of Access to Justice and Equity Song Kim.
For their appointment, individuals should bring any paperwork related to their legal matter. Services provided through Lawyers in Libraries are limited in scope, and participants will be asked to sign a consent form regarding the services provided.
The addition of West Hartford expands the CBA’s network of participating libraries across Connecticut and creates another local point of entry for people seeking help with legal questions.
