In an effort to further encourage and increase the active involvement of young lawyers, “transitioning” lawyers, and diverse lawyers in the activities of the CBA sections, the association has launched the Presidential Fellowship Program. The goal of the program is to provide such lawyers with the opportunity to become more involved in the substantive work of CBA sections, enhance their knowledge of the section, further develop into future leaders, and promote the section to other members of the YLS and the bar.

The Presidential Fellows, selected for a two-year term, are: Thamar Esperance-Smith, Emily Gianquinto, Cody Guarnieri, Lucas Hernandez, Susan Kirkeby, Jessie Opinion, and Mark Riley.

On Friday, October 23, the new fellows convened at the CBA Law Center in the New Britain for their first meeting as a group. The fellows were greeted by CBA Executive Director Douglas S. Brown, President-elect Monte E. Frank, and Membership Committee Co-chairs Garlinck Dumont and Jonathan M. Shapiro for a welcome breakfast reception in which they discussed their expectations of and roles throughout the program. Immediately following the breakfast, fellows attended a seminar titled, “Leadership in Action Workshop: A Case Study of Captain Jack Aubrey,” presented by Jim Flinn, VP of Operation, South Central CT Regional Water Authority. The workshop centered around clips of the film Master and Commander that segued into a group exercise in which each fellow expressed what he or she would have done in the situations shown in the clips. Their answers were then analyzed to see if their decisions would be effective. The first gathering of the Presidential Fellowship Program was a success and all participants look forward to future fellows events and activities.
