Attorney Lawrence S. Roberts II is attorney general for the Mohegan Tribe and works on a variety of federal Indian law issues. He is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin and a citizen of the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin. Prior to taking his current position, Attorney Roberts served as a professor of practice at Arizona State University Law School and as the executive director of its Indian gaming and tribal self-governance program.

During his legal career, Attorney Roberts has worked in private practice representing tribes, as well as serving as legal counsel at federal agencies. He has also served under both President Obama and President Biden’s administrations in the Department of Interior. During the Obama administration, Attorney Roberts served in multiple positions within Indian Affairs, including serving as acting assistant secretary and leading Indian Affairs for the last year of the administration. During the Biden administration, he became the first Native American to ever serve as chief of staff for the Department of the Interior. He served under U.S. Department of Interior Secretary Deb Haaland on multiple important issues, including the restoration of Bears Ears National Monument.
