John Dankosky will receive the Distinguished Public Service Award at the Connecticut Bar Association’s annual awards ceremony, Celebrate with the Stars, on Wednesday, April 9.
Dankosky has worked as a journalist, radio host, and moderator of live events in Connecticut since 1994. He currently serves as director of news and audio for the popular public radio program Science Friday and frequently appears as a guest on the program. His entry into science journalism originated from his coverage of climate change and environmental issues with Connecticut Public Radio, where he served as news director for more than 20 years.
As a co-host of the national talk program America Amplified and founding host of the regional magazine show NEXT, Dankosky has covered national, state, and local news. While at Connecticut Public, he launched the statewide programs Where We Live and The Wheelhouse. He was also a “founding friend” of the online newspaper The Connecticut Mirror, where he hosts a live event series called “In the Room” as well as podcasts, including Untold with Mercy Quaye. As a regular contributor to NPR, Dankosky has worked with the network to build journalism collaborations and is now heading up Science Friday's State of Science Reporting Network, bringing together great science reporting from across the country.
Dankosky has also produced edited national award-winning, long-form documentaries on mental health cand care for the elderly and has reported hundreds of short segments for NPR and public radio stations. Additionally, he has moderated many Connecticut Forum conversations in Hartford and live events for The International Festival of Arts & Ideas in New Haven.
The CBA Distinguished Public Service Award is given to a Connecticut resident, or a person with a meaningful relationship to Connecticut, who has made a significant contribution to society and has distinguished themself in their profession.
