James H Stark CWTS 2024James H. Stark will receive the Tapping Reeve Legal Educator Award at the CBA’s annual awards celebration, Celebrate with the Stars, on Wednesday, April 3.

Professor Stark is the Roger Sherman Professor of Law Emeritus and Oliver Ellsworth Research Professor at the University of Connecticut School of Law. He is a nationally recognized expert in mediation and alternative dispute resolution and has been a member of the UConn School of Law faculty since 1979. After beginning his tenure at the law school as the Director of Civil Clinical Programs, Professor Stark went on to serve as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs from 1990 to 1993, presiding over a faculty process that produced major revisions in the curriculum, including the creation of the first-year Legal Practice program. In 1994, he founded the Mediation Clinic, which marked the law school’s first foray into the field of alternative dispute resolution.

Professor Stark is a graduate of Cornell University and Columbia Law School and has authored numerous scholarly publications, several of which have been included in academic texts or recognized with awards. He has participated in various additional professional activities outside of his work with UConn, including serving as an editor of the Clinical Law Review, as chair of the Association of American Law Schools’ Committee on ADR Clinics, and as the reporter to the Connecticut Council for Divorce Mediation and Collaborative Practice Mediation Standards Committee. He currently serves as a volunteer mediator and arbitrator in the Connecticut Bar Association’s Lawyer-Client Fee Dispute Resolution Program and is a Scholar-in-Residence to the International Academy of Mediators.

Since joining UConn School of Law, Professor Stark has become a nationally esteemed figure in the fields of both clinical legal education and mediation. For over more than four decades he has been a formative influence for generations of law students, lawyers, and legal educators.

The Tapping Reeve Legal Educator Award is presented to a distinguished CBA member who is a member of the faculty, a clinical instructor, or an adjunct instructor at UConn Law School, Quinnipiac Law School, Yale Law School, or Western New England Law School who has contributed greatly to the legal education of his or her colleagues.
