The Trial and Appellate Track

Presented by the Appellate Advocacy Section

About the Program

Join an appellate judge and two appellate attorneys for a candid discussion on what really works (and what does not) when it comes to preserving issues for appeal.

Issue preservation can make or break an appeal—and it starts long before the notice of appeal is filed. In this session, an appellate judge and two appellate practitioners share practical strategies trial attorneys can use to ensure that objections, rulings, and records are preserved for meaningful review. Through real examples and common pitfalls, the panel will highlight how small choices at trial can have big consequences on appeal—and how to protect your record from start to finish.

Presented by the Litigation Section

About the Program

This trial practice program will focus on the use of jury consultants including recommended voir dire topics and specific questions that will be the most predictive of verdict orientation in a particular case in a specific venue.  The program will also demonstrate how a jury consultant assists with interpretation of the venire members’ verbal and body language responses, as well as recommend the most strategic use of cause and peremptory challenges in order to “de-select” the least favorable jurors.  The program will focus on the use of jury consultants to develop trial themes which will be introduced during jury selection and incorporated into the trial presentation.  The program will feature a mock jury selection to demonstrate the use of jury consultant during the voir dire process.

How attorneys should use a jury consultant during the jury selection process and what they can hope to achieve by doing so
How attorneys should use a jury consultant to develop trial themes for use during trial based upon case themes and the jurors that have been selected

The Trial and Appellate Track

Presented by the Alternative Dispute Resolution Section

About the Program

We are at risk of losing confidence in how public decisions are made and problems are solved and communities feel that they are being torn apart. In a polarized time, when addressing community concerns, building public facilities or making policy decisions it can feel hard to see common ground. This session will identify the structure and opportunities to use facilitation, regulatory negotiation, consensus building, deliberative dialogue and collaborative governance processes that can be used to bring people together for thoughtful and civil problem solving.  We will use Connecticut examples from the perspectives of the facilitator, process convener and stakeholder participant and reference the use of these processes for environmental, transportation, municipal infrastructure and community discussions on other issues such as immigration, elections, healthcare and gun control.

You Will Learn

How the use of facilitation, regulatory negotiation, consensus building, deliberative dialogue and collaborative governance processes can be used to bring people together for thoughtful and civil problem solving

Who Should Attend

Anyone interested in learning about ways to help stakeholders find voice, arrive at consensus policy decisions and better ways to resolve difficult and controversial public issues.
