The Honorable Terence A. Zemetis will receive the Edward F. Hennessey Professionalism Award at the Connecticut Bar Association’s annual awards celebration, Celebrate with the Stars, on Wednesday, May 3.
After he received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Connecticut and his law degree from Albany Law School, Judge Zemetis served as a trial attorney for over 30 years with Delaney & Zemetis PC. While serving as a lawyer, he tried several hundred cases in the state and federal courts of Connecticut. Judge Zemetis has successfully handled appeals in the Second Circuit Court of Appeals, the Connecticut Supreme Court, and the Connecticut Appellate Court.
In 2008, he was appointed as a Connecticut Superior Court Judge, a role he held for nearly 10 years before retiring at the end of 2018. Judge Zemetis presided over both criminal and civil jury cases, court trials, special proceedings cases, and the foreclosure and housing dockets. During his last four years on the bench, he managed the Connecticut Complex Civil Litigation Docket in Waterbury, presiding over aviation, business disputes, construction, employment, insurance, negligence, products liability including medical devices, and professional negligence.
Since his retirement from the judiciary, Judge Zemetis has resolved countless cases as a mediator/arbitrator and has created an ADR/Conflict Resolution practice focused on serious and multi-party litigation and conflicts outside of or not yet in the court system. As a lawyer and as a judge, he has participated in over 2,800 arbitration or mediation proceedings resolving disputes involving aviation, construction, contracts, employment, insurance, personal injury, professional negligence, and products liability.
For over 35 years, Judge Zemetis has shown exemplary professionalism through his willingness to share his experience and expertise with others. He has presented continuing legal education programs with the CBA and participated in UConn’s trial advocacy classes for decades.
The Edward F. Hennessey Professionalism Award recognizes and honors a member of the bar whose career has manifested a dedication to the highest ideals and standards of the legal profession.
