According to a recent analysis by the Washington Post using data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, being a lawyer is the most stressful job in the United States. It’s no wonder rates of burnout, anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts are off the charts and attorneys are leaving the profession in record numbers. Is it possible for attorneys to thrive? And, if so, how? This talk will present the current state of well-being in law and the movement underway to make change in the profession. There are reasons to be optimistic about the future and how you can play a role in it.

Heidi Alexander Heidi Alexander
Director, MA Supreme Judicial Court Standing Committee on Lawyer Well-Being

Heidi Alexander (she/they) is Massachusetts’ first director of the Supreme Judicial Court Standing Committee on Lawyer Well-Being. Before assuming that role, she served as the deputy director of Massachusetts Lawyers Concerned for Lawyers and led its Law Office Management Assistance Program, practiced law at a small firm in Boston, and clerked for a justice on the New Jersey Supreme Court.

She is the author of Evernote as a Law Practice Tool, past co-chair of ABA TECHSHOW, founder of the American Bar Association’s Women of Legal Tech initiative, and president-elect for the Institute for Well-Being in Law. She has been recognized as a Top Women of Law by Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly. She also served as the chair of the board of the Nominating and Governance Committee of NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) Massachusetts.

She is a native of Minnesota, a former collegiate goaltender for Amherst College’s Women's Ice Hockey Team, and a graduate of Rutgers School of Law, where she was the editor-in-chief of the Rutgers Law Review. She attends to her own well-being by coaching youth sports, playing hockey, lifting heavy weights, and, most importantly, spending time with her partner and three young kids.
