Charles D. Ray
Charles D. Ray will receive The Honorable Anthony V. DeMayo Pro Bono Award at the CBA’s annual awards celebration, Celebrate with the Stars, on Wednesday, April 20. Attorney Ray is a partner at McCarter & English LLP and a founding member of the firm’s Pro Bono Committee.
Through his role on McCarter & English LLP’s Pro Bono Committee, Attorney Ray supervises the firm’s partnership program with The Veterans Consortium Pro Bono Program, which reviews adverse claim decisions and prepares screening memos for use by attorneys appointed to represent veterans in the Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims. He has also worked with the Connecticut Veterans Legal Center for years to represent veterans seeking benefits through the United States Department of Veterans Affairs.
Attorney Ray has also participated in significant pro bono work with the Connecticut Innocence Project and Greater Hartford Legal Aid. In partnership with the Connecticut Innocence Project, he handled multiple wrongful conviction cases and litigated to protect the privacy of exonerees’ records. Working with Hartford Legal Aid, he notably sought predicate findings for special immigrant juvenile status before the Connecticut Supreme Court for an 18-year-old seeking asylum in the United States.
The Honorable Anthony V. DeMayo Pro Bono Award recognizes CBA members who demonstrated dedication to the provision of legal services without expectation of payment to those in need. He is one of four attorneys receiving the award this year.
