Certification as a Residential Real Estate Specialist Now Available

The Real Property Section has launched the Residential Real Estate Specialist Certification program to help the public identify attorneys who have demonstrated expertise in the area of residential real estate law based on their competence, experience, and skills. The first Residential Real Estate Specialist Certification exam will be held on February 28, 2020. Notice of intent to apply is due by October 10, 2019.

Tax on Legal Services Removed from State Budget

Governor Ned Lamont signed the most recent biennial state budget into law which does not include a sales tax on legal services as originally recommended. The CBA strongly opposed the proposal as it would unnecessarily tax people in times of their greatest need.

Diane D. Duhamel Receives 2019 Pomeranz-O'Brien Award

Attorney Diane D. Duhamel received the Pomeranz-O’Brien Award from the Connecticut Bar Association’s (CBA) Workers’ Compensation Section for her contribution and exemplary service to the workers’ compensation system and community. Attorney Duhamel was presented with the award at the 2019 Connecticut Legal Conference, during the section’s seminar, “Current Issues in the Workers’ Compensation System.”

CBA Hosts the Largest Gathering of Legal Professionals in Connecticut

More than 1,200 attorneys, judges, paralegals, and other legal professionals from throughout the state gathered on June 10 at the Connecticut Convention Center in Hartford for the 2019 Connecticut Legal Conference. The day began with a networking breakfast—including alumni receptions for Quinnipiac University School of Law as well as UConn School of Law—and wellness offerings of mindfulness, yoga, and a river walk.

The Connecticut Bar Association's Civics Education Committee held its annual Law Day Celebration on Friday, May 3, 2019 at the Connecticut Appellate Court in Hartford. Students from Timothy Edwards Middle School in South Windsor were joined by Secretary of the State Denise W. Merrill, CBA President Jonathan M. Shapiro, Civics Education Committee Chair Ralph J. Monaco, and committee members Hon. Susan B. Handy, Kathryn A. Calibey, Lawrence F. Morizio, and Jonathan Weiner.

Over 450 guests were in attendance at the sixth annual “Celebrate with the Stars” event on April 11 at the Aqua Turf Club in Plantsville. President Jonathan M. Shapiro began the night by acknowledging the support of the many dignitaries in attendance, including Lieutenant Governor Susan Bysiewicz, Attorney General William M. Tong, and United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut John H. Durham.
