The Connecticut Judicial Branch has announced the assignment of judges, which are effective September 2, 2019 - September 6, 2020.

The Real Property Section has launched the Residential Real Estate Specialist Certification program to help the public identify attorneys who have demonstrated expertise in the area of residential real estate law based on their competence, experience, and skills. The first Residential Real Estate Specialist Certification exam will be held on February 28, 2020. Notice of intent to apply is due by October 10, 2019.

Based on the past legislative session, new acts have become effective on July 1, 2019. Read about the new acts that are of special interest to CBA members.

Governor Ned Lamont signed the most recent biennial state budget into law which does not include a sales tax on legal services as originally recommended. The CBA strongly opposed the proposal as it would unnecessarily tax people in times of their greatest need.

Attorney Diane D. Duhamel received the Pomeranz-O’Brien Award from the Connecticut Bar Association’s (CBA) Workers’ Compensation Section for her contribution and exemplary service to the workers’ compensation system and community. Attorney Duhamel was presented with the award at the 2019 Connecticut Legal Conference, during the section’s seminar, “Current Issues in the Workers’ Compensation System.”

The Environmental Law Section honored Catherine Rawson, Atty. Gregory A. Sharp, and Penelope Chester Sharp (posthumously) with Clyde O. Fisher, Jr. Awards on Tuesday, June 18.

More than 1,200 attorneys, judges, paralegals, and other legal professionals from throughout the state gathered on June 10 at the Connecticut Convention Center in Hartford for the 2019 Connecticut Legal Conference. The day began with a networking breakfast—including alumni receptions for Quinnipiac University School of Law as well as UConn School of Law—and wellness offerings of mindfulness, yoga, and a river walk.

Attorneys Thomas A. Gugliotti, Paige M. Vaillancourt, and Robert A. White received CLABBY awards from the Connecticut Bar Association’s Commercial Law and Bankruptcy Section on Thursday, May 16.

The Connecticut Bar Association's Civics Education Committee held its annual Law Day Celebration on Friday, May 3, 2019 at the Connecticut Appellate Court in Hartford. Students from Timothy Edwards Middle School in South Windsor were joined by Secretary of the State Denise W. Merrill, CBA President Jonathan M. Shapiro, Civics Education Committee Chair Ralph J. Monaco, and committee members Hon. Susan B. Handy, Kathryn A. Calibey, Lawrence F. Morizio, and Jonathan Weiner.

The Environmental Law Section hosted "Taking an Appeal to the DEEP: Demystifying the Process."

Over 450 guests were in attendance at the sixth annual “Celebrate with the Stars” event on April 11 at the Aqua Turf Club in Plantsville. President Jonathan M. Shapiro began the night by acknowledging the support of the many dignitaries in attendance, including Lieutenant Governor Susan Bysiewicz, Attorney General William M. Tong, and United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut John H. Durham.

CBA President Jonathan M. Shapiro and Vice President Amy Lin Meyerson attended the 2019 ABA Day in Washington, DC, on April 9-11, along with CBA Past Presidents Livia D. Barndollar (2008-2009) and Barry C. Hawkins (2012-2013). Vice President Amy Lin Meyerson and Past President Livia D. Barndollar are Connecticut delegates to the American Bar Association.

The Environmental Law Section co-hosted the second annual "Evening of Connecticut Environmental Leadership featuring author Elizabeth DeSombre.

The Connecticut Bar Association is pleased to announce the addition of Attorney Thomas A. Genung as the new director of CLE and section programming as of March 19.

Attorneys Diane D. Duhamel and Joseph R. Passaretti, Jr. were inducted into The College of Workers' Compensation Lawyers (CWCL) on March 14 at the ABA Workers' Compensation Midwinter Conference and CWCL Symposium in Coral Gable, FL..

The Supreme Court has adopted a policy, effective with the eighth term of court, to govern the sua sponte solicitation of briefs of amicus curiae in specific pending cases.

In an effort to assist lawyers affected by the shutdown of the federal government, the Connecticut Bar Association is offering free CLE programs to all affected lawyers through the month of February.

The Environmental Law Section honored Westmoor Park with the Clyde O. Fisher, Jr. Award on Thursday, November 8. This award recognizes individuals or entities who have made a significant contribution to the preservation or enhancement of environmental quality through work in the fields of environmental law, environmental protection, and environmental planning.
